What are the parts of a stream? |
|
What else can you see?By simply looking at a stream there are a lot of things you can learn about it. Here are a few things to pay attention to:
Look at the water: If the water is clear and does not smell that means that it is a healthy stream. Foam or discoloration on the water suggests that there are pollutants. Look at the banks: Sand banks move and change size and shape after large amounts of rain. If sand banks seem to be growing there may be an excess of sediment in the water. Steep banks also suggest an erosion issue. Look at the plants: There should be vegetation growing on the banks, and usually some roots hanging into the water. These root provide habitats and food for animals and insects that live in the stream. |
